Bisate is set in the natural amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone, with the cones of Bisoke and Karisimbi rising directly ahead. The six villas are spherical, thatched and woven, drawing on the form of the Rwandan royal residence, and each has a fireplace and a wall of glass facing the volcanoes.

The lodge sits on land Wilderness has been reforesting since 2017, and guests are usually invited to plant a tree themselves. The surrounding hillsides, previously farmed, are now filling with indigenous species, and the project is among the more substantial habitat-restoration efforts attached to a lodge anywhere.

Gorilla treks depart from the park headquarters roughly half an hour away, with permits purchased separately. Golden monkey trekking, guided walks to nearby villages and a visit to the Dian Fossey Fund's Ellen Campus are the usual additions.
