Magashi occupies a peninsula on Lake Rwanyakazinga in the north of Akagera, a park that has been comprehensively restored over the past decade: lion were reintroduced in 2015, eastern black rhino in 2017, and white rhino a few years after that. It is now the only place in Rwanda where all of the Big Five occur.

The six tents look out over papyrus and open water, with a raised main area and a design that nods to Rwandan weaving and basketry without overdoing it. Hippo and crocodile are constant company, and the birdlife around the lake, including shoebill, is exceptional.

Most visitors pair a couple of nights here with gorilla trekking in the northwest, which makes for a well-balanced trip: forest and mountain first, then open savannah, lake cruises and night drives at the other end of the country.
