Kwitonda sits on 178 acres of former farmland that Singita has been replanting with indigenous forest since 2019, directly against the boundary of Volcanoes National Park. The eight suites are built from volcanic stone quarried nearby, with floor-to-ceiling glass facing the Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura peaks and a fireplace at both ends of each room.
Gorilla trekking is the reason almost everyone comes. Treks leave from the park headquarters at Kinigi, a few minutes away, and permits are bought separately from the Rwanda Development Board. The lodge handles the logistics, the boots and the after-trek soaking.
There is a good deal else, though: a nursery growing tens of thousands of seedlings a year, a conservation school, a bee-keeping project, golden monkey treks and the Dian Fossey research site at Karisoke. The spa and the gym are unusually good for a mountain lodge.
