Phobjikha is a broad glacial bowl at 3,000 metres, ringed by forest and famous as the wintering ground of the black-necked crane, which arrives from Tibet each November. Gangtey Lodge sits on the valley's edge in a converted farmhouse, looking across to the Gangtey Goenpa monastery.
Twelve suites each have a bukhari stove, a window seat and a freestanding bath positioned so you can soak while watching the light move across the valley. The lodge is small enough that staff quickly know everyone by name, and evenings are spent by the fire with butter tea or hot toddies.
Days are for walking: the Gangtey Nature Trail, the crane centre, village visits, mountain biking and archery with the local team.
