Amankora Paro stands in a pine forest at the top of the Paro valley, close to the ruined fortress of Drukgyel Dzong and within sight, on a clear day, of the sacred peak of Jomolhari. The lodge is built in rammed earth in the manner of a dzong, with narrow windows and thick walls.
Twenty-four suites share the same template across all five Amankora lodges: a wood-burning bukhari stove, a king bed, a daybed in the window and an enormous soaking tub. Meals are taken communally in a single dining room, and the spa offers traditional hot stone baths.
Most guests use Paro as the start or end of a multi-valley Amankora journey, and the hike up to Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery clinging to a cliff face, is the set-piece excursion.
