Nicknamed the Palace in the Sky, the Thimphu lodge sits on a ridge above the capital with glass walls framing the valley and the enormous gilded Buddha Dordenma on the opposite hillside. Twenty suites and a villa are built around a courtyard in contemporary Bhutanese style.
Six Senses runs the most developed wellness infrastructure in the country, and the Thimphu spa offers everything from traditional hot stone baths to sleep and detox programmes designed around the altitude. The indoor pool looks straight out at the mountains.
Thimphu is the only capital city in the world without traffic lights, and guides take guests to the weekend market, the textile museum, the takin preserve and the great dzong at the centre of town.
