The Algonquin has stood above St. Andrews by-the-Sea since 1889, a red-roofed Tudor-revival pile that has been the anchor of this small New Brunswick resort town for well over a century. A full restoration returned it to Marriott's Autograph Collection with the period character intact and the plumbing brought up to date.
The golf course is the standout — a clifftop layout running along Passamaquoddy Bay with holes that drop towards the water, regularly rated among the best in Atlantic Canada. Inside there is a spa, an indoor pool with a three-storey waterslide for families, a veranda for afternoon tea and several restaurants including a traditional pub.
St. Andrews itself is a walkable grid of nineteenth-century houses and galleries, and the Bay of Fundy whale-watching fleet sails from the town wharf. Tides here are among the largest on earth.
