Opened in 1932 for the first wave of travellers arriving to see Angkor, the Grand Hotel d'Angkor retains its original wrought-iron birdcage lift, checkerboard floors and long louvred corridors. A careful restoration completed in 2019 undid decades of well-meaning modernisation and added two new wings that read as period rather than pastiche.
The grounds are the hotel's other asset: six acres of French-style gardens with a large swimming pool at the centre, unusual for a town-centre property. The Elephant Bar remains a Siem Reap institution.
The temples of Angkor are a ten-minute drive, and the royal gardens, old market and Pub Street are all within walking distance.
