Llangoed Hall
Clough Williams-Ellis's grand Wye Valley house, art on every wall

Llangoed Hall stands on a site occupied since 560, but the house as it appears now is largely the work of Clough Williams-Ellis, who remodelled a Jacobean mansion in 1914 before he turned his attention to Portmeirion. It was rescued in the 1980s by Sir Bernard Ashley of Laura Ashley, whose collection of paintings still hangs throughout the public rooms.
Twenty-three bedrooms are individually decorated, generously sized and, in the best of them, look out over the Wye towards the Black Mountains. Downstairs there is a proper library, a drawing room and a restaurant holding AA rosettes that draws heavily on the hall's own kitchen garden.
Seventeen acres of gardens and meadow run down towards the river. Hay-on-Wye and its bookshops are ten minutes away, Brecon and the Bannau Brycheiniog uplands a little further, and the hotel can arrange fishing, shooting and falconry.
