Tyddyn Llan spent three decades as one of the defining restaurants in Wales under Bryan and Susan Webb, who held a Michelin star here for much of that time. They sold up in 2024, and the house has since reopened under new ownership with chef Gareth Stevenson in the kitchen and money spent on the bedrooms and dining rooms.

The building is a Georgian former shooting lodge, low and grey, standing in its own gardens outside the village of Llandrillo. There are around a dozen bedrooms, comfortable rather than showy, and the point of the place remains what happens at dinner: a tasting menu and carte built on Welsh lamb, Dee Valley game and Cardigan Bay shellfish, with a wine list that has always been better than the building's modesty suggests.

The Berwyn hills rise straight behind, with the Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall and the old drovers' road over the ridge to Bala within a short drive. It is a good base for walkers who want serious food at the end of the day.
