Le Sereno is the most restrained of the St Barth hotels, a low white building on the lagoon at Grand Cul-de-Sac with interiors originally conceived by Christian Liaigre. The look is spare and expensive: dark wood, natural linen, clean lines and no visual noise.

Rooms open directly onto the sand or onto private gardens, and a handful of villas sit at the far end of the property with their own pools. The water in front is shallow and almost always flat, which suits swimmers and small children.

There is one restaurant, a small spa, and very little else by way of programming. That is the point. Guests who want restaurants and nightlife drive fifteen minutes to Gustavia and come back to the quiet.
