Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan
Entered across a bridge into a rooftop lotus pond, then down into the Ayung gorge

The approach is the best-known thing about this resort: guests cross a teak bridge at treetop height onto the roof of the main building, which is an elliptical lotus pond, then descend through the structure into the Ayung River gorge below. John Heah's design has aged well since it opened in 1998.
Accommodation steps down the valley sides in suites and private villas, most with plunge pools, all facing into dense river-valley forest. The river is audible from almost everywhere on the property. Public spaces include a riverside pool, a spa built at water level and a restaurant on the upper terraces.
Ubud's galleries, temples and markets are a short drive away, but the resort is far enough out that the valley stays quiet. Programming covers rice-field walks, river blessings with a local priest, and a well-regarded wellness offering including sacred nap rituals and multi-day retreats.
