Amanpuri

The pavilion resort that started Aman, still holding its coconut grove above the Andaman

Opened in 1988 as the first Aman anywhere, Amanpuri occupies a former coconut plantation on Phuket's quieter west coast, above a small private bay. The layout has barely changed: black-roofed Thai-style pavilions stepping down the slope, linked by walkways through the palms, with a long black granite pool at the centre that has become one of the most photographed in Asia.

Accommodation splits between the original pavilions, each with its own sala and outdoor sitting area, and a separate collection of multi-bedroom villas up the hill with their own pools, kitchens and staff. The scale is deliberately modest for the price bracket, which is much of the point — guests come for the space and quiet rather than for facilities.

The wellness centre runs multi-day immersion programmes alongside conventional spa treatments, and the resort keeps a fleet of boats for day trips into Phang Nga Bay and out to the Similan Islands. Dining leans Thai, Italian and Japanese, with a beach club on the sand below.
