Turtle Inn faces the Caribbean on the narrow Placencia peninsula in southern Belize, with thatched cottages set just behind the beach. The interiors draw on Balinese carving and materials brought in by the founder, and most rooms have walled outdoor garden showers.
It is an easy-going place: two restaurants, one of them a beachfront pizzeria, a dive shop on site, and a spa under the palms. The barrier reef, the Silk Cayes and whale shark diving at Gladden Spit are all reached from here, along with river trips inland to Monkey River.
Placencia village is a short walk or cart ride along the sand, small and low-key compared with Ambergris Caye. Many guests combine a stay with a few nights inland at the same group's Blancaneaux Lodge.
