Few hotels are as physically bound up with a golf course as this one. The building sits hard against the seventeenth of the Old Course — the Road Hole — whose drive is played blind over the hotel's own corner, and whose replica sheds carry the hotel's name.
Opened in 1968 on the site of the old railway station and owned since 2004 by Destination Kohler, it runs to around 175 rooms following an extensive refurbishment programme. The Kohler Waters Spa was the first outside the United States and has been reworked twice in recent years; dining includes the Swilcan Loft looking out over the links.
Beyond golf there is the town itself: the cathedral ruins, the castle, the university and the long sweep of West Sands. The resort also has access to the Duke's Course inland.
