The Angel has stood on Cross Street in Abergavenny since the early nineteenth century, when it was a staging post on the coach road to west Wales. It has spent the past two decades as the anchor of the town's food reputation, which is considerable: Abergavenny hosts one of Britain's leading food festivals and is ringed by some of the best pubs and kitchens in the country.

Rooms are spread across the main hotel and a set of neighbouring townhouses and mews, decorated in a warm, unfussy style that stops well short of country-house formality. Downstairs there is a busy bar, the Oak Room restaurant, and a lounge where the hotel's much-garlanded afternoon tea is served — it has won national awards more than once.

Abergavenny sits at the eastern gate of Bannau Brycheiniog, with the Sugar Loaf, Blorenge and Skirrid all walkable from the town. The Black Mountains, Llanthony Priory and the Wye Valley are within easy driving distance.
