Senda sits on a wooded slope at Monteverde, minutes from the cloud forest reserves that made the area famous. Rooms are grouped in low wooden buildings threaded through the trees, and the grounds are managed as part of a wildlife corridor, so sloths, agoutis and a long list of birds pass through daily.
The hotel keeps naturalist guides on staff and runs early-morning birding walks on its own land as well as trips into the Monteverde and Santa Elena reserves, night walks and the area's hanging bridges and zip lines.
Monteverde sits at around 1,400 metres and is genuinely cool and often misty, which comes as a surprise to guests arriving from the Pacific beaches. Pack layers.
