Sandy Lane
The grande dame of the Platinum Coast, coral stone and old-school polish

Sandy Lane has anchored the west coast since 1961 and still sets the standard against which every other Barbadian hotel is measured. Cut from honey-coloured local coral stone and set in mature mahogany gardens that slope down to a crescent of calm Caribbean water, it trades in a particular kind of unhurried formality that has kept the same families returning for three generations.
The rooms and suites are generous and conservative rather than fashionable, with deep terraces, marble bathrooms and butler service that anticipates rather than intrudes. Dining runs from the beachfront Bajan Blue to the more formal L'Acajou, and the wine cellar is one of the better ones in the region.
Beyond the beach, the property runs 45 holes of golf including the Green Monkey course, a floodlit tennis centre and a spa built around a hydrotherapy pool beneath a domed ceiling. It is a resort that rewards staying put.
