qualia occupies a private peninsula at the northern end of Hamilton Island, separated from the rest of the island's resort activity and with water on three sides. Sixty timber pavilions are set into the bushland along boardwalks; Leeward pavilions look across the Coral Sea, Windward pavilions add a private plunge pool and face the sunrise over the Whitsunday Passage.

The property is adults-only and unusually quiet for a Barrier Reef resort. Two restaurants operate - Long Pavilion for breakfast and a more formal evening menu, Pebble Beach at the water's edge. Guests choose between a rate including breakfast and one adding dinner. Two pools, a spa built over the water and a small fleet of boats and golf buggies complete it.

The reef itself is the day out: Hardy Reef pontoon trips, seaplane landings on Whitehaven Beach, and the aerial view of Heart Reef. Hamilton Island has its own jet airport, so access is direct from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.
