Alkina is three separate four-bedroom residences set apart on a hilltop at Wattle Hill, looking out over farmland to the Southern Ocean. They were designed by Glenn Murcutt and Wendy Lewin, and the brief - to touch the earth lightly - shows in the long, low, single-storey forms and the way the buildings sit into the contour rather than on top of it.

Each house is taken whole rather than by the room, which makes it work for a family or two couples travelling together. They are fully self-contained, with a Gaggenau kitchen, a wood fireplace, heated floors and an art collection that is genuinely worth looking at. A private chef, in-house massage and stocked-fridge arrival can all be arranged in advance.

The Twelve Apostles are about twenty minutes west, Port Campbell thirty, and Melbourne under three hours. The Great Otway National Park rainforest walks are close in the other direction. Minimum stay is two nights.
