Southern Ocean Lodge
Rebuilt on its clifftop after the fires, facing nothing but the Southern Ocean

The original lodge was destroyed in the Kangaroo Island bushfires of January 2020. It reopened in December 2023 on the same clifftop above Hanson Bay, rebuilt larger and more fire-resilient, with 25 suites strung along a limestone ridge and a great curved main pavilion at the centre. Every suite has a glass wall facing the open ocean and a sunken lounge; the top-end Remarkable Suite adds a private pool.
Rates take in all dining, an open bar of premium Australian wines and spirits, an in-suite bar restocked daily, island airport transfers and a programme of guided experiences. Those run to the fur seal colony at Cape du Couedic, the wind-carved granite of Remarkable Rocks, koala and kangaroo spotting at dusk, and tastings with island producers.
The surrounding bush is regenerating fast, and the guides are candid about what burned and what came back. The Southern Spa sits at the quiet end of the ridge. Two-night minimum stay applies.
