Punta Caliza is a twelve-room hotel on Isla Holbox, the sandbar island off the northern tip of the Yucatan where the streets are sand and the transport is golf carts. The building is its main asset: a set of shallow pools and thatched volumes arranged so that almost every room opens onto water.
It is a short walk from the village and the beach, so it works as a base rather than a self-contained resort. Breakfast is cooked to order, there is a small spa, and the staff arrange the island's signature trips.
Holbox sits inside a biosphere reserve. Whale sharks gather offshore roughly from June to September, flamingos pass through, and the shallow lagoon behind the island glows with bioluminescence on dark nights.
