JOALI BEING
A whole island built around wellbeing rather than bolted onto a beach resort

JOALI BEING occupies the island of Bodufushi in Raa Atoll and was conceived from the ground up as a wellbeing retreat rather than a beach resort with a spa attached. Programmes are organised around four themes - mind, skin, microbiome and energy - and guests are assigned a practitioner who builds an itinerary rather than handing over a treatment menu.
The physical design supports that intent. A freshwater stream runs through the island, there is a sound therapy pavilion, hydrotherapy facilities, an overwater yoga space and a herbology centre where ingredients are grown and processed on site. Food is nutrition-led without tipping into austerity, and the kitchen works with the resident practitioners on what lands on the plate.
It is adults-only, which suits the format, and shares a sister property in the same atoll for guests who want a more conventional stay. Access is by seaplane from Male. Expect a calm, unhurried island rather than a party one - this is somewhere you go with an intention.
