Milaidhoo Island Maldives
Fifty villas on a sandbank-sized island, and not a crowd in sight

Milaidhoo is small even by Maldivian standards, roughly 300 metres by 180, and the whole island can be walked end to end in a few minutes. That compactness is the point: fifty villas, each with a private pool, spread between a beachfront row and a curve of overwater suites reaching into the lagoon. The design leans on timber, thatch and local craft rather than high-gloss minimalism.
The resort opened in 2016 and has stayed independent rather than being absorbed into a large chain, which shows in the details. Every villa comes with an island host, and the kitchen makes a genuine effort with Maldivian cooking, including a restaurant built entirely around the archipelago's own recipes rather than a generic international menu.
It sits within the Baa Atoll biosphere reserve and a short boat ride from Hanifaru Bay, so the seasonal manta gathering is easily reached. The house reef is unusually good for a resort this close to shore. Note that the island welcomes children aged eight and above only, which keeps the atmosphere quiet.
