Hotel Escondido
Stripped-back adults-only palapas on a wild Oaxacan surf coast

Escondido is the deliberately austere one: a row of thatched, concrete-floored cabanas facing a long empty beach on the Oaxacan coast, each with a small plunge pool and a hammock and very little else. There are no televisions and the wifi is treated as an afterthought.
The kitchen cooks simply from local fish, corn and chillies, and the bar leans on mezcal from the Oaxacan highlands. Days are structured around swimming in the pool rather than the sea, which is powerful here, plus surf trips to nearby breaks and turtle releases in season.
Puerto Escondido has direct flights from Mexico City and Oaxaca City, and the town's beaches and Zicatela's surf scene are a short drive west. Adults only.
