Craigellachie sits at the meeting of the Spey and the Fiddich, surrounded by more working distilleries than anywhere else on earth. The hotel, built in 1893, has been the whisky traveller's base for generations, and the Quaich Bar is the reason: somewhere north of seven hundred single malts, ranged along the shelves with staff who can actually navigate them.

Twenty-six rooms occupy the main building, comfortably updated without losing the Victorian proportions. Dining splits between GEAMAIR, which runs a tasting menu built on Moray produce, and the Spey Inn, a drovers' inn tracing its licence back to 1703.

Thomas Telford's 1814 iron bridge crosses the river a few hundred yards away, and the Speyside Way passes the door. Macallan, Aberlour, Glenfiddich and Glenfarclas are all within a short drive.
