Formerly Sunlaws House and long associated with the Dukes of Roxburghe, this Borders estate near Kelso has been through a major expansion and now runs at a scale unusual for the region: twenty rooms and suites in the historic manor, fifty-eight more in a purpose-built Estate House, and around fifty self-catering cottages.
The centrepiece is a 600 square metre spa with a heated outdoor pool, along with a championship golf course laid out along the Teviot. Dining at Sunlaws holds three AA rosettes, and there is a country sports centre for shooting and fishing on the estate.
It carries AA five stars and sits under the Lindner group's L-Collection. Floors Castle, the Tweed's best salmon beats, Melrose Abbey and Abbotsford are all a short drive, and the whole of the Borders opens up from here.
