Greywalls was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1901 as a golfing retreat, and it is one of the few Lutyens houses in Scotland open to the public in any form. The six acres of walled garden are widely attributed to Gertrude Jekyll, and the house curves gently round them in honey-coloured stone.
It sits immediately beside Muirfield, home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, with a dozen other links courses along the East Lothian coast within a few miles. Rooms are divided between the main house and adjoining cottage, with a self-catering property, the Colonel's House, in the grounds.
The restaurant operates as Chez Roux. Edinburgh is half an hour west; North Berwick, Dirleton Castle and the beaches at Yellowcraig are all closer still. Dogs are welcome in any bedroom, which is rarer than it should be.
