The single-track road to Elgol runs fourteen miles from Broadford and then stops at the sea. Coruisk House is near its end: a converted croft house with four bedrooms, two of them split-level suites in the old steading, all looking out towards the Sleat peninsula and the Small Isles.

The restaurant is the reason most people come. A four-course set menu changes daily around whatever the boats and the crofts have produced — langoustine, hand-dived scallops, Skye lamb, foraged greens — and is served at a single sitting. The wine list has been an AA award finalist.

Beyond the door is one of Skye's great views: the Cuillin ridge across Loch Scavaig, with boats running from Elgol pier to Loch Coruisk itself. Guests are adults and older children only, and the silence after dark is total.
