Alphonse Island Lodge

A remote outer-island lodge built for divers, anglers and nobody else

Alphonse sits around 400 kilometres southwest of Mahe, near the edge of Seychelles territory, and reaching it takes a scheduled charter flight of a little over an hour. The lodge is the only accommodation, with a small number of beach bungalows and villas set under casuarina trees along the western shore.

It has a serious reputation in two specialist worlds. The neighbouring St Francois atoll offers some of the most productive saltwater fly fishing anywhere, and the reefs and drop-offs around the island are as close to pristine as the Indian Ocean gets, having never been subject to commercial fishing pressure. Divers and anglers make up much of the guest list, though the island works perfectly well for people who simply want to be a long way from anything.

The operation is run by Blue Safari and takes its environmental obligations seriously, with a resident conservation team monitoring turtles, reefs and fish stocks. Rates moved to an all-inclusive basis and are quoted per person, with a three-night minimum stay in force year round.
