The Whitebrook is a restaurant with rooms hidden in a narrow wooded side-valley running down to the Wye a few miles above Tintern. Chef Chris Harrod's cooking is built around what grows in that valley — hedgerow leaves, wild herbs, fungi, river-edge plants — combined with produce from Monmouthshire growers, and it holds a Michelin star, a Michelin Green Star for sustainability and four AA rosettes.
The building is a whitewashed former inn, low-slung and unshowy, and the bedrooms above the restaurant are calm and contemporary, designed so that you can walk upstairs after a long tasting menu without getting into a car. Several look directly onto the wooded slope.
The setting is the lower Wye Valley at its most enclosed and green. Tintern Abbey is a short drive down the river, Offa's Dyke Path runs along the ridge above, and Monmouth is ten minutes north.
