Most arrivals into Sri Lanka land at Katunayake, and most visitors head straight out. The Wallawwa makes a case for stopping: a two-hundred-year-old manor house set in two acres of walled tropical garden, fifteen minutes from the terminal but entirely insulated from it.

Eighteen rooms and suites are spread through the old house and garden wings, with four-posters, verandas and plunge pools in the larger categories. There is a pool under the trees, a spa specialising in Ayurvedic and Balinese treatments, and a colonial-style bar.

Negombo's fish market, lagoon and Dutch canal are a short drive north, and the hotel arranges early-morning boat trips for those with time to spare before a flight.
