Pamushana is built along a sandstone ridge overlooking Malilangwe Dam, on a private wildlife reserve of some 130,000 acres in Zimbabwe's southeastern lowveld, adjoining Gonarezhou National Park. The eight suites are grand in a way that is unusual even in this bracket, with carved timber, coloured glass and private pools set into the rock.
The reserve is a serious conservation operation. Malilangwe holds one of Africa's more significant black and white rhino populations, and the trust that runs it also feeds tens of thousands of local schoolchildren each day. Guests are given a clear account of how the two are connected.
Game drives, walks, boating on the dam, fishing, archery and visits to rock-art shelters fill the days. Visitor numbers are deliberately tiny relative to the area, so sightings are almost always private.
