Matakauri sits on a shelf of land above Lake Wakatipu, about seven minutes' drive from Queenstown but feeling considerably further out. Eleven suites and a four-bedroom owner's cottage are spread through beech and tussock, all angled at the water and the serrated ridge of the Remarkables beyond. Floor-to-ceiling glass, schist stone, open fires.
The rate is quoted per person and covers pre-dinner drinks and canapes, a four-course dinner, full breakfast and the in-room minibar. The kitchen is ambitious and changes constantly with the season - Fiordland crayfish, Central Otago stone fruit, local pinot noir from a few valleys over.
The spa has an indoor pool and treatment rooms that look straight down the lake. Queenstown's activity list is on the doorstep: heli-skiing and the Remarkables and Coronet Peak fields in winter, jet boating, hiking and Central Otago wine touring in summer. Rosewood took over management of the lodge, which was previously known simply as Matakauri Lodge.
