Kauri Cliffs occupies 6,000 acres of working sheep and cattle country on the Northland coast, north of the Bay of Islands proper. The main lodge is a colonial-style building on a headland; guest suites are in cottages scattered through the grounds, each with a private porch looking out over the Pacific towards the Cavalli Islands.
The golf course is the property's calling card - fifteen holes with ocean views and six played along the cliff edge - but the land itself is the larger draw. Three private beaches are reached by farm track, and native bush walks lead down to the Waiaua Bay waterfalls. Mountain biking, tennis, sea kayaking and fishing charters are all arranged from the lodge.
Rates are quoted per person and include pre-dinner drinks and canapes, a multi-course dinner and full breakfast. There is a spa in the forest, a heated pool and a cellar strong on Northland and Hawke's Bay wine. Rosewood now manages the lodge, formerly The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs.
