The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, now run by Rosewood, sits on a ridge at the end of a long private road through 6,000 acres of working sheep and cattle farm in Hawke's Bay. The land falls away in a series of deep ravines to cliffs three hundred feet above the sea, and the headland below holds one of the world's largest mainland gannet colonies - accessible on a farm tour.
Accommodation is in a main lodge and a row of suites along the ridge, plus a four-bedroom owner's cottage. Everything faces east over Hawke Bay, so sunrises are the event of the day. Rates are quoted per person and include pre-dinner drinks, dinner and breakfast.
The golf course, laid out along the ridges between the ravines, is regularly ranked among the best in the world. Beyond it there is a predator-free conservation sanctuary on the property where kiwi have been reintroduced, plus mountain biking, a spa, and the cellar doors of Hawke's Bay - New Zealand's oldest wine region - twenty minutes away.
