Fiordland Lodge is a big-timbered building on a rise above Lake Te Anau, on the edge of the World Heritage wilderness that runs west to the Tasman Sea. Ten rooms sit within the lodge and two self-contained log cabins stand apart in the tussock; the whole property takes a maximum of 27 guests, which keeps the great room genuinely convivial rather than crowded.

Rates include breakfast and a set dinner. The dining room is the only one in Te Anau with an uninterrupted view across the lake to the Fiordland ranges, and the kitchen leans on Southland lamb, Stewart Island seafood and Central Otago wine. Pre-dinner drinks happen around the stone fireplace under an exposed A-frame.

This is the practical base for Fiordland. Milford Sound is a two-hour drive through the Homer Tunnel, Doubtful Sound reachable via Lake Manapouri, and the Kepler, Routeburn and Milford tracks all start within striking distance. The lodge arranges guided day walks, scenic flights and kayaking.
