Mowani Mountain Camp
Thatched domes tucked among the red granite boulders of Damaraland

Mowani is built into a jumble of rounded granite boulders above the Aba-Huab riverbed, its thatched domes designed to disappear against the rock when seen from below. The main areas step up and down the outcrop, and a short climb leads to a sundowner point that looks across a great deal of empty Damaraland.
The camp is close to Twyfelfontein, whose sandstone panels carry thousands of prehistoric engravings and hold UNESCO World Heritage status. Guided visits there, along with the Burnt Mountain and the Organ Pipes basalt columns, fill most first days.
The other draw is the desert-adapted elephant of the Aba-Huab and Huab valleys, tracked on full-day drives. Sightings are never guaranteed, and guides here are straightforward about that, but the search itself takes you through a remarkable stretch of country.
