Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp
Desert lions and elephants in one of Africa's emptiest river valleys

Hoanib sits in a side valley of the seasonal Hoanib River, deep in the Kaokoveld and effectively reachable only by light aircraft. Eight canvas-and-steel rooms are spaced along a slope, each with a shaded lounging deck looking out across gravel and sparse vegetation toward ridges that change colour through the day.
The area is known for desert-adapted wildlife: elephant that walk enormous distances between waterholes, giraffe, oryx, and a small and heavily studied population of desert lion. Wilderness supports long-running research here, and guests often meet the researchers or hear about collared individuals over dinner.
A full-day excursion runs down the riverbed to the Skeleton Coast itself, taking in the seal colony at Mowe Bay and returning by light aircraft over the dune belt. It is a long day and by common agreement the best one on the itinerary.
