Position is everything at Petra, and the Movenpick sits almost directly across from the visitor centre, which means guests can walk to the Siq entrance in a couple of minutes and be inside the Nabataean city before the coaches arrive from Amman. It also makes returning for the evening candlelit walk to the Treasury painless.
The building itself is a serious piece of craftsmanship, with an atrium of inlaid stone, carved cedar and brass work that took Syrian and Jordanian artisans a long time to complete. Rooms are traditional rather than fashionable, and there are seven restaurants and bars including a roof garden with views over Wadi Musa.
A small wellness centre with a pool, steam room and fitness suite is welcome after the six or seven hours of walking that a full Petra day demands. Little Petra, Shobak castle and the Wadi Rum road are all within easy reach.
