Wadi Rum is a protected area of wind-carved sandstone jebels rising straight out of red sand, used as a location for everything from Lawrence of Arabia to a long run of science-fiction films. Memories Aicha is one of the better-run camps in the valley, about ten minutes from the visitor centre, combining traditional goat-hair tents with modern domes.
The panoramic bubble units are the reason most guests book: transparent roofs mean you can lie in bed and watch the Milky Way arc over the rock walls, and Wadi Rum has some of the darkest skies in the region. Larger tented suites add a sitting area and a private terrace.
Meals are Bedouin, including zarb cooked in a sand oven, and the camp arranges jeep tours, camel rides, rock scrambles and hot air balloon flights at dawn. Petra is roughly two hours north, Aqaba and the Red Sea an hour south.
