Hotel 1001 Nótt
A quiet lakeside hotel in the east, with hot tubs facing Lagarfljót

East Iceland has very little in the way of luxury hotels, and 1001 Nótt is about as close as the region gets. It is family owned, set on a slope five kilometres outside Egilsstaðir, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the rooms looking over Lake Lagarfljót towards the Snæfell massif.
The appeal is simplicity done well: spacious modern rooms, two outdoor hot tubs on the terrace above the water, a small bar and a breakfast that guests routinely single out as the best of their trip.
It makes a practical stop between the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Mývatn, and a base for Hallormsstaður forest, the Hengifoss waterfall and the drive over the pass to Seyðisfjörður.
