Fonab Castle Hotel & Spa
Scots baronial turrets above Loch Faskally, with a thermal suite in the woods

Fonab was built in 1892 to designs by the Perth architect Andrew Heiton, a full-blooded exercise in Scots baronial with turrets, crow-stepped gables and red sandstone. It stands in eleven acres directly above Loch Faskally, a short walk from Pitlochry along the loch shore.
The modern additions are handled well. The Woodland Spa has a thermal suite, indoor pool and treatment rooms looking into the trees; the 1892 Grill does modern Scottish cooking; and a set of glass dining pods sit right at the water's edge for private dinners. Forty-two bedrooms are split between the castle and a contemporary wing, most facing the loch.
Pitlochry makes a good base for Highland Perthshire — the Enchanted Forest at Faskally, the Pass of Killiecrankie, Blair Castle and two distilleries within a few miles.
