Erg Chigaga is the wilder of Morocco's two great dune fields, a 40-kilometre ridge of sand south-west of M'Hamid that takes a couple of hours of off-road driving to reach. This camp sits among the dunes themselves rather than on the fringe, in traditional caidal tents lined with rugs and hand-woven textiles, with proper beds and ensuite bathrooms.
There is no road, no mains power beyond solar and no signal, which is rather the point. Guests climb the high dune behind camp for sunrise, ride camels out along the ridges, and eat tagines at long tables under the open sky before Berber drumming and an unbroken view of the Milky Way.
Getting here is part of the trip, usually via the Draa valley palm groves and the old caravan town of Zagora. Most guests stay one or two nights as the culmination of a southern Morocco loop.
