Ellenborough Park occupies a manor whose origins run back to the fifteenth century, set on the slope beneath Cleeve Hill with Cheltenham racecourse immediately below. During the Festival it is one of the most sought-after beds in Gloucestershire; the rest of the year it is remarkably quiet.

The main house keeps its Tudor bones - mullioned windows, heavy beams, a minstrels' gallery - while rooms in the converted stable block and newer wings are lighter and more contemporary. Ninety acres of grounds run up towards the escarpment.

The spa is compact but well done, with an indoor pool, treatment rooms and thermal facilities, and the hotel arranges the sort of estate diversions that suit a country-house stay: falconry, clay shooting, off-road driving. Cheltenham's restaurants and Regency terraces are ten minutes away.
