Rudding Park wraps a Regency country house in a substantial modern hotel, and the combination works better than it sounds. The estate runs to several hundred acres of parkland and gardens, with two golf courses and a kitchen garden that supplies the restaurants.
The spa is the headline. Built into and onto the roof, it pairs an indoor hydrotherapy circuit with open-air hot pools and a garden sauna, so guests can sit outside in steam while Yorkshire does whatever Yorkshire is doing overhead. There is also a private cinema and a well-regarded restaurant.
Harrogate is a few minutes away, with its Turkish baths, Betty's and Valley Gardens; the southern Dales and the city of York are both within half an hour or so.
