Doxford Hall Hotel & Spa
A Georgian hall and spa a short drive from Northumberland's castle coast

Doxford Hall was built in 1818 and restored into a country house hotel of thirty-six bedrooms, set in its own gardens in the quiet farmland between Alnwick and the coast. It holds four AA red stars — a distinction the AA awards sparingly, and at the time of writing the only one of its kind in the county.
The spa is a proper facility rather than an afterthought, with a swimming pool, gym and a treatment list that runs from aromatherapy to Thai massage. Public rooms keep the Georgian proportions and there are cabanas beside the pool for slower afternoons.
The position is the real luxury. Bamburgh Castle, Dunstanburgh, the Farne Islands boat trips from Seahouses and the tidal causeway to Lindisfarne are all within a short drive, as are Alnwick Castle and its garden.
