The Wahiba, or Sharqiya, Sands are a belt of steep orange dunes running inland from Oman's east coast, still grazed by Bedouin families and their camels. Desert Nights Camp sits in a hollow among them, about two hours from Muscat, and swaps canvas for permanent structures with solid walls under tented roofs, so rooms stay cool and have proper bathrooms.
The camp is deliberately low-key: a central majlis tent for meals, a pool, and a lot of open sand. Guests take dune drives at sunset, ride camels, try sandboarding, and eat under strings of lanterns with no competing light for a hundred kilometres.
Most visitors arrive as part of a loop taking in Nizwa fort, the Wadi Bani Khalid pools and the turtle beach at Ras al Jinz. Access to the camp is by 4x4 only; the operator meets guests at the edge of the sands.
