Cempedak is a 42-acre private island around nine kilometres off the east coast of Bintan, reachable from Singapore in roughly two and a half hours by ferry and road. It is owner-managed and adults-only, and the sister property to nearby Nikoi Island.

The villas are the point: built almost entirely from bamboo by craftsmen working without steel frames, each perched among the island's granite boulders with a private pool and an open front looking out to sea. Nothing is air-conditioned in the conventional sense — the buildings are designed to catch the breeze.

Sustainability is built into the operation rather than bolted on, with an on-island farm, solar power and a conservation levy that funds mangrove and turtle work on the Bintan coast. Days revolve around swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, the tennis court and not much else, which is the intention.
