Alila Villas Uluwatu sits on the dry limestone plateau of the Bukit Peninsula at Bali's southern tip, a landscape of scrub and cliffs quite unlike the island's green interior. The architecture, by WOHA, responds with hard lines, volcanic stone, local lava rock and long cantilevers reaching out over the drop.

The villas are one- and three-bedroom units, each walled for privacy with its own pool and cabana, arranged so that the ocean is the only thing in view. The much-photographed cabana jutting from the clifftop above the main pool has become the property's signature image.

It was one of the first Asian resorts to earn a serious green building certification, and the design still carries that logic — passive cooling, local materials, rainwater harvesting. Uluwatu Temple and the surf breaks at Padang Padang and Bingin are a short drive, and the airport is under an hour away.
